Bacon Number Four

I have a new favorite game!

After watching a movie last night, Gonzo and I were looking up an actress on IMDB (the Internet Movie Data Base). For some reason I started thinking about the whole "everyone in the film industry is six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon" thing, and decided to see if it was true. It took only four clicks to get from the actress we were looking at, Natascha McElhone, to Kevin Bacon. I was amazed, and dorkishly delighted, that I did it. I am in love with Gene Kelly. Again, four clicks. Gonzo gave me a challenge - Truman Capote. I found three separate lines from him to Kevin; one took three, another took four and an even trickier one took eight. Being a true blue film / theater geek, this game is funner for me than a jello covered slip n' slide!

Gonzo drove home and we continued playing over the phone. He read to me the Wikipedia definition of the trivia game titled Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon: "...based on the idea that, due to his prolific screen career, any Hollywood actor can be "linked" to another in a handful of "steps" based on their associations with Bacon and because the name "Kevin Bacon" rhymes with the last word of the phrase "six degrees of separation." A person's number of degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon is known as one's "Bacon Number." Suddenly my life depended on discovering what my Bacon number would be. It took all of three minutes to click my way through IMDB and find out.

Kevin Bacon was in "The River Wild" with...

Meryl Streep, who was in "Sophie's Choice" with...

Kevin Kline, who was in "Pirates of Penzance" with...

Angela Lansbury...

Who's mother I played in an episode of "Touched By An Angel!"

Who needs a job? Who needs a book deal? Who needs money or a husband or a relocation to California? NOT ME! I have a Bacon Number of FOUR and a personality just lame enough to care!

Kind of.

Everybody cut, everybody cut Footloose!

People just look and me and stare when I tell 'em I work 5 minutes from where Kevin Bacon became a star...Lehi Roller Mills.

I'd be proud of a 4 as well. :)

I can't compete with a 4, but through you & Brigham City, I suppose I can claim to be a 5.

You made my day. Thanks, Em.

I love that game - it makes a great road trip game (so long as you're playing with other actor/movie geeks and don't need IMDB). It gets competitive to see who can come up with the shortest Bacon numbers for people. Yes, my geek flag flies high at times. But it's FUN.

4 is very respectable.
